Satellite calibration & data validation

Assessing the inherent uncertainties in satellite data products is a challenging task. The success or failure of any Earth Observation (EO) mission depends on the quality of its data. To achieve optimum levels of reliability, most sensors are calibrated pre-launch. However, the characteristics of the sensor may change during launch and when the satellite is on-orbit. Post-launch calibration is therefore essential for detecting any changes that occurred during launch and during the entire lifetime of the sensor while in-orbit. However, on-board calibrators are also susceptible to degradation over time.

CIMEL intervenes in the process of calibrating satellite instrumentations and validating their data on atmospheric composition post-launch.

Atmospheric CAL / VAL

Satellite calibration / Data validation

Cimel brings a strong added value to the satellite calibration and data validation by providing ground-based measurements during satellite overpasses.

Ocean Color CAL / VAL

Satellite calibration / Data validation

The Ocean Color observations from satellites are the principal tool for the global monitoring of marine aerosols and water radiance. Indeed, the current systems can provide only coarse spatial resolution, with relevant lack of data. By measuring the water radiance from the sea with instruments installed on-offshore platforms or boats, Cimel improves the accuracy of satellites measurements.
